A one-day conference for teachers who just completed their first year of teaching in Illinois. Conference activities included speakers, breakout sessions, networking opportunities and more.

Why:
Beginning teachers face tough challenges in their first year. This was an opportunity for them to:

  • Reflect on and share the past year’s teaching experience
  • Contribute to the improvement of preservice teacher preparation and novice teacher induction
  • Network with beginning teachers from around the state

Keynote Address and Discussion:
The True Heroes of the World
Manuel Scott, an original "Freedom Writer," provided participants with real life examples of the power teachers have to make a difference in the lives of children. Discuss reflections related to Manuel's message.

Preventing Bullying through Social-Emotional Learning & Positive Behavior Supports
Dr. Dorothy Espelage's provided participants with a presentation focused on studies about bullying and initiatives targeting the prevention of bullying. View her presentation and discuss the relevance of this presentation to your own teaching situation or experience.
Burning Questions Extend the small group discussions of Y2 participants' "Burning Questions" by participating in this online discussion. A new question posed by a Y2 participant will be posted regularly.
Sharing Successful Strategies Y2 participants shared examples of practices and strategies that they found to be useful during their first year in the classroom. View their successful strategies, strategies contributed by other Illinois educators, and share some of your own.
