Materials or Resources:
Journals and pencils and five minute hour glass timer.
Preparation:
Write the topic of the day and the date on the board.
Activity or Strategy Description:
When students enter the room, they grab their journals off the counter. Once in their seats, they open their journals and write the date in the top, right-hand corner. I then go over the topic, and then I flip the timer. They know they have to write for the full five minutes in complete silence. I do not grade these and only I read them. They share very personal information with me. I do give them participation points for each day they wrote.
