A Manuel Scott teaching moment
Teaching at an alternative allows many teaching moments. In particular, a student was shot and I went to visit him in the hospital and I brought nothing with me. He saw me and he said "Your not going to give me homework? You didn't come to give me a lecture?". I replied, "I come to let you know that I care by asking you how can I help you? What can I do for you? Homework can wait, lets get you better. If you are not at your best, how can I expect you to concentrate on the homework and give quality work. There are times that it is hard to concentrate and I believe this is one of them. He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said I am scared. My mind just runs and runs. I keep thinking of things that can happen to me and you come in and tell me not to worry about homework. What a relief! How do I go back? Where do I start? I respond we cant jump hurdles without learning how to leap so lets take it slow. He took a deep breath and said you are so right. Rushing things got me here.
